Freedom isn’t free: Champions Online goes free to play this month

Champions Online

Since announcing last year that Champions Online would be going the increasingly popular free-to-play route, the developers at Cryptic Studios have been having a great time beta testing the F2P iteration of their superhero MMO. They’ve been having such a great time that they’ve gone and announced a due date for your first foray into subscription-free crimefighting: January 25th.

Free to play means microtransactions, so you’ll be able to buy various content packs and cool stuff from Cryptic’s C-Store should you choose to play the game for free. However, you’ll still be able to subscribe for a Gold membership (at $14.99 a month), which will immediately grant you access to all the C-Store goodies. If you want more info, check out this FAQ.
