Fans of Risen: listen up. Piranha Bytes (former developers of the Gothic series – who lost the Gothic license when they broke away from their former publisher JoWood to pursue their own interests) and Deep Silver have dropped details on Risen’s sequel and it all sounds very ambitious. Set “several years after” the events of the original game, the land of Risen 2: Dark Waters has since been devastated by Titans and the seas are teeming with all manner of sea beasties.
The developers are definitely aiming very high, boldly claiming that Risen 2 “will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.” Also, there are pirates and guns and rumours of boat travel, which obviously equals maximum immersion. Expanded choices and abilities are promised, as well as “multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions.” The game “aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales.”
This all sounds very enticing. The original Risen was good, but flawed and the developers never quite hit the high mark they were aiming for. Maybe they’ll finally hit that mark with this sequel, which is coming to PC and consoles (no specifics have yet been mentioned) at some future date.
