Don’t look at your adverts, play with them

That is what Microsoft is hoping you’ll do if this new ownership filing is anything to go by. TechCrunch has spotted a filing by Microsoft for something called NUAds. According to the description, NUAds are “advertising services, namely, promoting and marketing the goods and services of others through online interactive video games by enabling consumers to interact with third-party advertising content through voice or body gestures via computer game console and sensor devices”.

It looks like Kinect might become Microsoft’s new go-to device for generating revenue through advertising. Why get people to simply read an advert banner or watch a short clip when you can get them to interact with the product instead?

We’re already exposed to a plethora of advertising campaigns on our Xbox Dashboards, so why not make them a little more interesting? Providing they remain unobtrusive and entirely optional, NUAds might be an entertaining and novel way to promote a product. Then again, are you happy with spending R2000.00 on a peripheral for Microsoft to use it to advertise further products to you? You’re not? Well isn’t that what’s happening on your Dashboard already?
