id’s post apocalyptic FPS Rage comes out next week Friday, 7 October. It uses the development team’s shiny new id Tech 5 engine that has all sorts of fancy features like Virtual Texturing. As such, the game requires a bit of hard drive space.

Tim Willits, the creative director for Rage, confirmed at the recent Eurogamer Expo that the Xbox 360 version will be split onto three discs. Chapter one of the game is on the first disc and chapter two is on the second. The multiplayer components for Rage are on the third disc. You can install the whole lot onto your Xbox, but it requires 22GB of space.

The install is not mandatory, but it will speed things up on the Xbox 360. Willits said that you only really need to have one disc installed at a time if you’re strapped for space on your Xbox HDD.

As for the PlayStation 3 version of the game, Willits confirmed that the game requires an 8GB install, but that Sony was very accommodating when it came to allowing this.

“Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don’t allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level.”

PC gamers won’t get off lightly when it comes to install sizes, as it was revealed a few weeks ago that Rage requires a 25GB install. That being said, hard drive space isn’t as valuable a commodity on PCs as it is on the two consoles.
