Here’s some good news for Xbox 360 owners champing at the bit for Battlefield 3: the second disc will have a little more than just the multiplayer portion of the game. You better clear some space on your Xbox hard drive because DICE is bundling a high resolution texture pack onto the second DVD.
This means you’ll be able to do a completely voluntary install of the game, allowing you to play the single-player portion off the first disc and stream the lovely looking hi-res textures from your 360’s hard drive. Of course, even an announcement as simple as this one has been turned into an opportunity to slag off the competition: “We’re pushing that technology to the limit, and compared to our competitors, I would argue that we’re the best looking game” said Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Liu.
There’s no mention of whether or not the hi-res textures will be on the PlayStation 3 version but I don’t see why not despite Gamerzines suggesting otherwise. If they are then I’d expect there to be a mandatory install for the game on the Sony console seeing as how streaming content from the Blu-ray drive isn’t exactly super fast.
