You know how you often say, “If I had mountains of cash I’d totally XYZ”? Well, there are actual people who get to say that in real life. Notch, the guy who made Minecraft, is one of those people thanks to the Scrooge McDuck-sized pile of cash he made from his indie game. As such, when Notch says things on Twitter like “Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen”, he really means it. The fact that he follows up tweets like that one with “I’m serious” is really more like a courtesy.
Tim Schafer, the guy behind Psychonauts (amongst other titles like The Secret of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle) recently confessed that he’d pitched Psychonauts 2 to a number of publishers; all of them said no. That’s not surprising considering the original didn’t sell well despite its contemporary legion of rabid fans and cult status. Notch might be part of those rabid fans because he’s willing to put forward the millions required to get Psychonauts 2 going.
At the moment, there is absolutely nothing other than the initial tweets from Notch and a statement from Double Fine (Schafer’s studio) saying that the two are exchanging emails regarding this potential deal. There are, however, plans for Notch and Shafer to meet up at GDC this year. Who knows, anything could happen, and if one of those things happens to be Psychonauts 2, then that’s fine with us.
