While I personally have no interest in the One Piece anime /cartoon or manga/comic, the upcoming One Piece: Pirate Warriors game for PlayStation 3 has my attention because of its genre. I’ve always had a soft spot for the muso genre, which is basically about playing a stupidly overpowered character (from a roster of many) facing off against a battlefield of thousands. Muso or musou, is Japanese for “The Only One” or “Without Equal”.
The most well-known muso series is Dynasty Warriors / Samurai Warriors, developed by Omega Force, who are also responsible for Pirate Warriors. The game will have online play for one-one-one versus, while the campaign follows the One Piece manga East Blue Saga until the New World Saga.
The game will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the series, which started back in 1997 as a popular Shōnen manga (manga for males 10 and up) in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The series is about Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old delinquent pirate boy who, after eating a supernatural fruit, gains super elastic abilities. Cue lots of protracted fights against ridiculously powerful villains and slapstick comedy situations, as Luffy searches the world for the ultimate treasure known as the One Piece.
