New game The Phantom Pain is probably Metal Gear Solid 5

Emphasis on “probably”. Remember all the conspiracy theories that cropped up when Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes debuted back in August? Well, clearly all of the rampant speculation has carried over to The Phantom Pain, which is a new game that got announced at last Friday’s Spike TV Video Game Awards.

The Phantom Pain is being developed by a Swedish studio called Moby Dick Studios. The game’s debut trailer poses more questions than it provides answers – literally. The main protagonist wakes up in a hospital with a prosthetic arm. Moments later a bunch of soldiers burst in and start killing people. There’s also a fiery unicorn and a giant whale swallowing a helicopter whole. Yeah, we’re not making that up.

The Internet believes that The Phantom Pain is actually Metal Gear Solid 5 and there are a number of reasons as to why this is the case. For a start, the main character in The Phantom Pain looks a lot like Solid Snake / Naked Snake even though we don’t actually see his face. Then there’s the fact that the character emerges from the hospital only to find himself in an area that looks a lot like the one in the Ground Zeroes reveal trailer.

That’s not all however, as the CEO of Moby Dick Studios is somebody called Joakim Mogren, and the name “Joakim” is an anagram for Kojima – the creator of the Metal Gear series. Kotaku has also highlighted the fact that “Joakim Mogren’s”  Twitter account has a photoshopped picture of Kojima, but this could be a joke account in response to this online speculation.

Finally, the title screen for The Phantom Pain has a number of extra lines attached to certain letters. If you had to super-impose “Metal Gear Solid” over the title, then those lines would match up. Take a look below to see what we mean.

So, who knows? The Phantom Pain might actually be Metal Gear Solid 5 or, you know, it could be a trippy new action game that’s actually being made by some Swedish dudes. Yeah it’s totally another Metal Gear Solid game.
