The wonderful development team known as Team ICO has pretty much missed this entire console generation. On the PlayStation 2, they made titles like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus – the latter being one of my all-time favourite video games. When the PlayStation 3 was announced way back in 2005, many, many Sony fans wondered what Team ICO would have in store for us. That’s when they revealed The Last Guardian.
At the end of this year, Sony will release the PlayStation 4. We’re all still waiting for The Last Guardian. For the last couple of years now, the long-absent title has been in and out of the news but mostly for bad reasons: abandonment of trademarks, studio heads resigning, producers resigning, announcements that the team was needing help from other developers. It’s been a seriously bumpy ride that’s taken us seemingly nowhere nearer to actually playing The Last Guardian.
It was rumoured that the game had been shifted to PS4; that in itself would be a concern because it would mean rewriting pretty much the entire thing considering the impending hardware changes in the PS4. After the PS4 was revealed with absolutely no news on Team ICO’s missing title, people asked Sony: “where the hell is The Last Guardian?”
Speaking to Kotaku, Shuhei Yoshida, the man in charge of Sony Worldwide Studios, said that he was sorry to the fans who have been waiting this long. “”I apologize to people who are waiting for the game. Ueda-san posted that he’s still working on it, that he’s creative-directing it and that the team in the Japan studios are working hard. We are waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian.”
Insofar as the rumour of the game heading to the PS4 is concerned, Yoshida said “we’re going to talk about it when we can.”
Until then, we wait – like we’ve been doing for years.
