L.A. Noire lead designer Brendan McNamara went on to join film maker George Miller’s KMM Studios after his Team Bondi development studio was shuttered. Things got a little ugly after L.A. Noire released, what with allegations of abusive working conditions at Team Bondi. As a result Rockstar side-stepped the chance to publish McNamara’s next project. That’s how he ended up with KMM Studio’s games division, developing his project, Whore of the Orient.

Not much is known about Whore of the Orient other than that it was (is?) heading towards next-gen systems. According to reports, the team working on the game at KMM has been sacked and the project has been shut down.

However, Kotaku has pointed out that there are currently job listings on the KMM website, such as one requesting a lead engine programmer for the game. Kotaku gave KMM a call to enquire about the position, but were told those positions had been pushed back by a couple of months, which seems to indicate that all is well and development is continuing.

KMM Studios is, however, refusing to comment on the whole thing. While the film company is alive and kicking, they’re not commenting on their gaming division. For now, it seems as if things are up in the air, but judging by the bumpy ride experience by Whore of the Orient so far, it wouldn’t be surprising if the game is canned.
