Before the 3D graphics revolution of the mid 90s, pixel art ruled the roost. Today, only the dedicated (and talented) keep the style alive. Which is a pity, because the sense of place, and scale, that was hand-crafted into the backdrops found in popular fighting games of the era, still blows me away.
Playing games like Fatal Fury, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Art of Fighting, King of Fighters, Street Fighter, Last Resort and others, wasn’t just about hitting people in the face – but travelling to exotic locations the average kid at the time would likely never see.
An enterprising enthusiast decided to collect some of the best backdrops from across several generations of fighting games. You can view the full set of 125 backdrops over here. Highly recommended.
