When EA announced that they’d penned an exclusive deal to develop and publish Star Wars games for Disney, among the developers they said they’d assigned development jobs to was DICE. While many probably thought that that meant DICE in Sweden, the dev team behind the Battlefield series, that would actually be wrong.
It turns out EA is doing to DICE what they did to BioWare: setting up multiple satellite studios with new talent and labelling them under a familiar AAA developer. While DICE Sweden will continue to work on Battlefield content and the Frostbite 3 engine, this new Los Angeles based DICE will be tasked with making Star Wars games.
EA has already begun hiring staff for the new DICE offshoot, and they anticipate having around 60 employees by the end of the year. Whether you think this is good news or not, a lot of the staff are developers who previously worked on EA’s Medal of Honor series. It’s interesting to note that DICE Sweden’s general manager, Karl-Magnus Troedsson, pointed out that the new LA DICE would be situated in the same city as DICE’s biggest rivals: Treyarch and Infinity Ward.
