Movies that star good looking, burly men and fast cars seem to be making a lot of money these days. Weirdly, The Fast and the Furious is rapidly becoming Universal’s biggest film franchise. The last time I checked there were only two of those films; now they’re on number six? Man, I need to get out more.
Recently, Dreamworks has shacked up with Electronic Arts to begin production on a Need for Speed movie. EA made a big song and dance out of this during their press conference at E3; they even trotted out lead actor Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) to wave at all of us journalists. Now, however, Sony wants in on all the fast car movie action, which is why they’ve revealed that they’re working on a Gran Turismo movie.
The film is being produced by Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who recently produced the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. If you think about it, that’s quite apt considering games like Gran Turismo and their subsequent movies are pretty much car porn.
This is all still in the very early stages of development, so don’t expect to hear about starring roles and scripts any time soon I’d imagine. Also, considering this is a video game movie, you can expect the producers (and later screenwriters and directors) to change about twelve times before any actual filming starts. That’s par for the course when it comes to gaming movies, but considering Sony is already in the film business, maybe they’ll get it right from the start?
