Upcoming open-world action game Whore of the Orient has been called out for its racist title by a Chinese resident of Australia who claims the title evokes a concept that is “particularly painful for older people in the communities”. The game, which is currently in development by Brendan McNamara’s Team Bondi, is set in Shanghai during the 1930s. The term “Whore of the Orient” is a nickname that has long referred to the Chinese city of Shanghai.

Jieh-Yung Lo is a councillor for the City of Monash in Melbourne, but his insistence that Whore of the Orient is a racist title is him acting in his private capacity as a Chinese-Australian. According to Lo, the word “Orient” is “very similar to the N-word for African-American communities”.

“That was a very bad time in China, and people don’t want or need to have that dragged up,” Lo insists. He is calling for Team Bandai to “retract the title and stop development of the game”. Not sure he’s going to have much luck with that considering the Australian government has pledged upwards of AU $200, 000.00 to the development of the game.
