Don’t get excited – this is the date for phase one of Microsoft’s staggered roll-out. Yesterday we spoke about the eight countries getting the console on launch day; for them the launch day is 22 November 2013. If you’re keeping score, that’s a week behind the PlayStation 4, which is out on 15 November 2013 in the USA. It’ll be very interesting to see if that week leg-up makes a difference to Sony in the very Xbox-dominated US territory.
Making the opening rounds of the next-gen console wars even more interesting is the fact that the Xbox One will be out a week earlier than the PlayStation 4 in certain EU territories. The European landscape has always been slightly more in favour of Sony’s PlayStation brand, so a week earlier Xbox One will be interesting to watch as well. It’s quite a bizarre scenario the more I think about it: Sony and Microsoft choosing to launch in countries that have traditionally been areas where the one has outperformed the other in terms of initial sales.
As for the rest of the world, the wait for a concrete release date continues as Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi offered the following limp information: “Many more markets will follow in 2014.” Exactly when is anyone’s guess.
