rAge 2013 has been open for just over two hours as I write this and it’s getting pretty busy. There are stands offering all sorts of things all over the place. I stopped by to sample some nuts and some really fine meat just now, I’ve messed around with some Alienware and ASUS laptops, held that sexy, dead sexy Dualshock 4 controller and I’ve played a bit of Driveclub. This place is awesome. and by far its the games that are taking up center stage.
The most anticipated title isn’t, surprisingly, Battlefield 4. There are far more people lining up to see a demo of Watch_Dogs, being demonstrated by Ubisoft developers in conjunction with Megarom in the Castle corner. Even though the shows are separated by an hour, there are people lining up outside the demo room entrance long before that.
Battlefield 4 is a big hit at the Telkom Do Gaming and Alienware stands. The game is attracting attention from old and new gamers to the Battlefield series and it’s one of the games at rAge that have the biggest press. You can play it at the Telkom Do Gaming and Alienware stands, as well as the ASUS booth and the Giotek booth. If I find one more place, I’ll add to the growing list on Twitter or in the article here.
Of course, there are the two next-generation consoles, the front lines of the war I talked about – the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 are playable at rAge. The PS4 stand plays host to demos of Driveclub and Knack, while the Xbox One stand hosts Forza 5, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son of Rome. The PS4 is also additionally playable at the Megarom stand, hosting a playable demo of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.
I haven’t had the chance to have a go at the One because of a large crowd of people likewise looking to get into the action. But there’s a reason for that – no-one is playing on the Xbox 360 demos (maybe people don’t like Fable?). Elsewhere in the dome there are 360 demos of FIFA and another game I cant remember right now, but all of the attention at Microsoft’s stand is on the new hotness.
That’s in stark contrast to the games playable on the PS3 stand. Sony is demoing Gran Turismo 6, Beyond: Two Souls, a new Castlevania and Marvel Lego Heroes. Is the next-gen wonder from Microsoft under-represented because it has a delayed launch in South Africa? I don’t know and certainly no-one at the Xbox One stand will confirm a release date either.
Moving to more positive news, though! I played The Crew and it looks every bit as good as the demo videos you’ve seen before. The version on the expo floor is powered by desktop computer running all-AMD hardware, namely a octo-core FX-8320, a Radeon HD7970, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Performance was great and the game ran at a solid 60fps with V-Sync on. The demo was unfortunately not online and all other players on the map were simulations. That being said, with close on 200 other virtualised players on the map, performance never dropped below 60fps.
That’s all the updates we have time for right now. Keep your eye on NAG Online for all the juicy details from rAge 2013!
