Hyper Light Drifter is a bit of a pixel darling. Blending extraordinary animation featuring tonal and artistic influences from Shadow of the Colossus and Miyazaki’s Nausicaä and Laputa with gameplay that developers Heart Machine describe as “the best parts of A Link to the Past and Diablo“, the game’s presentation was a huge factor in an absurdly successful Kickstarter campaign that saw it earn way over the initial $27,000 goal.
Now Heart Machine has released a pre-alpha combat video to demonstrate some of the core combat mechanics.
“This is a pre-alpha basic demonstration – leveling has been left out, and the weapon set is very limited,” explains creator Alexander Preston. “We want to highlight a few key things for everyone, like the shield push, missile deflect/cut, and enemy management.”

Despite this slew of caveats, the game is looking mighty fine. One can only hope that the gameplay will match the level of visual splendour. Hyper Light Drifter is set to pass our way in mid-2014 on a variety of platforms, so until then you’ll just have to keep refreshing the original teaser trailer below. So good.
