No, honestly, it really is a lot of fun.

I’ve put 13 hours into FTL:Faster Than Light. At least, I think so — it’s a tricky thing, time dilation.

Anyway, it’s an excellent top-down quasi-real-time space simulator and sci-fi cliché generator that has you travelling the galaxy, meeting interesting races then shooting them. And now Subset Games have announced they’ll be releasing a free expansion for the PC that adds a whole whack of content. Calling it FTL: Advanced Edition, the game will be getting new gameplay mechanics in the form of hacking and mind control as well as many new additions to existing content with new sectors, weapons, augmentations, enemies and the like.

The team also announced that the game is coming to iPad, with specific optimisations for touch devices and all of the new expansion content baked in. No Android port, unfortunately; the team explains that due to their small size, it’s necessary to focus on one system at a time to ensure sanity. Phones have been ruled out entirely, which is probably for the best since I’m not sure what would happen to my productivity if I had it on tap.

The PC expansion and iPad version will drop sometime in early 2014.
