Starbound patch: the only certain thing is death


Most people aren’t sure how the universe ends, really. Some prefer a mythical comeuppance; science posits several scenarios, largely involving the word “Big” and entropy in an ever-expanding universe.

Starbound devs, however, are 99.98750% certain that it ends when they roll out their new patch next week – a patch which fixes several bugs and (fittingly) introduces permadeath mode, several weapons, more random encounters and, of course, the End of All Things. Unfortunately, the patch will wipe all players’ progress, including ships, characters and worlds. Lay down with your character’s new-found ability to not blink in bed and ponder on the ephemerality of it all as you drift into a comforting eternal slumber.

You cannot escape.

The full list of gameplay changes can be found below, while bug fixes can be seen in full on the website here:

  • New game modes! Permadeath and drop-everything-on-death modes.
  • Revolvers, pulse rifles, hand grenades, shivs, Floran needlers, Floran thorn hammer
  • Human guards now wear soldier uniforms
  • More decorative hats! Yay, hats!
  • More random encounters
  • Possibly more content, if it’s finished on time!

Developers Chucklefish have stated that the patch includes a fix to saves which will render this cyclical Ragnarok a thing of the past for characters and ships, while the fate of all worlds receives an ambivalent, hopeful shrug. Such is the nature of Early Access, I suppose.
