Nintendo is shutting down Wii and DS online gaming features

There seems to be a lot of shutting down happening today. Nintendo has just revealed that they will be ending online features for the Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi consoles as of 20th of May 2014. That means the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services will switched off, ending online gaming support for a multitude of Wii and DS games that still have active online communities.

Games like Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Pokémon Battle Revolution on the Wii will be affected. Over on the DS, games like Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World and a load of Pokémon titles such as Black, White, Pearl and Diamond will no longer feature online components like leader boards and online play. A full list of games affected across the three platforms can be found here.

This shutdown won’t affect the consoles’ web browsers, Shop channels, and YouTube. While this news of the shutdown was first discovered in Australia, Nintendo has confirmed that it will be a global shutdown.
