New Orcs Must Die! game will be a free to play MOBA

A new game in Robot Entertainment’s popular Orcs Must Die! series will be released in late 2014 and will add MOBA and collectable card game elements to the series’ excellent third-person orc-slaying foundation. Titled Orcs Must Die! Unchained (or humans must die – depending which team you are on), the game will be a free 5v5 multiplayer experience that aims to emulate the success of the free to play models of MOBAs League of Legends and Dota 2.

Instead of simply defending against waves of orcish onslaught with a maze of wicked and sadistic traps, players can now also lead waves of AI allies into battle in an effort to push through the opposing team’s wicked and sadistic traps to destroy their fortress. Robot Entertainment have been calling the title a “fortress siege game” and have already confirmed that dozens of playable characters will be made available for both factions – the humans of the Order and the new monster heroes known as the Unchained. The game will also offer solo and co-op modes versus bots and players will now be able to order their army of minions down specific lanes to attack the enemy team. The specific powers, abilities, traps and type of minions each player has will be determined by the cards they have collected and which of these cards they select when entering battle.

Speaking at massive gaming event PAX East, Robot Entertainment said that the biggest challenge the developers are currently facing is finding a way for the game to be balanced and competitive. They also stated that, despite adopting a free to play model, no cards or items will be locked behind a pay wall and that they are taking care to avoid pay-to-win scenarios.
