Yep, good ol’ DOOM II. The thing was doing the rounds at roughly the same time South Africans were casting their votes in our first democratic election. Two decades later, it’s still trucking: the open-source nature of the engine and well-founded editing tools have helped sustain a modding community that’s alive and well to the present day. I’ve already covered some of the more noteworthy DOOM-based projects to appear recently: Sonic Robo Blast 2, Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch and the venerable Brutal Doom. However, none of them can possibly compare to this.
What you’re looking at in these screenshots is the rather uninspiringly-titled mod known as Total Chaos. It’s an open-world survival/exploration thingy (yes, one of those again) where you’re placed on an island with a video camera and nary a gun in sight. Of course, we all know how harsh and unforgiving life can be, so naturally players will have to muster all their common sense to make sure that various nasties don’t eat their faces whilst ensuring their own needs are met.
It’s nothing we haven’t heard before, but the survival genre is one that never gets old. It’s also beautifully rendered and is absolutely mind-blowing to think that they’re basing it on an old modified DOS game. While it hasn’t been released yet and we can’t honestly tell if it’ll be any good, it may nonetheless become the definitive reason to dredge out your old floppy disks and reinstall DOOM II.
