Evo 2014 begins: “The world is full of fighting”

Guilty Gear reference aside, July looks set to be an exciting month for fans of competitive gaming. Dota 2‘s The International 2014 began in earnest earlier this week, and now the Evolution Championship Series 2014 (better known as Evo or Evo2k, and considered by many to be the premiere international fighting game contest) will be sorting the wheat from the salt this weekend when it starts at roughly 3pm South African time today.

The mainstream resurgence of fighting games can largely be attributed to the release of Street Fighter IV in 2008, and as new titles have become popular the official tournament games list for Evo has continued to evolve. Fan-favourite Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike only bowed out in 2009, and since then the list has morphed considerably. Evo 2014 features a swathe of 2D and 3D fighters, providing a decent mix of titles to sate most fans’ preference.

The games this year include:

  • Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Killer Instinct
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • BlazBlue: ChronoPhantasma

Slighted games such as Skullgirls will be running side tournaments alongside the main event, so the weekend promises a fighting extravaganza for those that can tear themselves away from The International.
