Actor Will Ferrell has announced a cancer fund raising challenge called “Will Ferrell’s SuperMegaBlastMax Gamer Challenge”. The fund raiser is being hosted on Indiegogo, and both Microsoft’s Xbox brand and Amazon are involved. Ferrell is hoping to raise $375,000 by October for kids affected by cancer.
Everyone who pledges $10 or more to the fund raiser gets entered into a sweepstakes to win a chance to join Ferrell at the Twitch offices in San Francisco. There, the lucky winner and Ferrell will get to play video games together for two hours; the whole thing will be broadcasted live via Twitch.
The fund raiser has a number of tiered perk items for those who donate more. Things like specially branded SuperMegaBlastMax sunscreen (cancer, remember?) and custom autographed Xbox One controllers are on offer. Needless to say, the signed controllers sold out within seconds.
No matter what your opinion of Ferrell is, it’s a good cause and certainly a unique way of raising cash. Ferrell also makes reference to the fact that gamers are ordinarily a dedicated and generous group of people, which is largely true. Goodness knows the gaming scene could use some positivity round about now what with the events of the last few weeks.
Unfortunately, while you can still donate to the cause, you cannot be eligible for the perks or the sweepstake unless you live in the USA.
