Well now, I’m just going to go ahead and say that I did not see this coming. A new Tomb Raider movies has been known about for a while, but a TV series as well now? That’s the gist of it according to director Stephen Lunsford, who revealed the new project (oddly) via his Instagram account. That reveal, however, has since disappeared so perhaps Mr. Lunsford jumped the gun a little? Whatever the case, Eurogamer latched onto the news before it was expunged from the convoluted mass of wires we lovingly refer to as the Internet.
“I’m happy to announce that I will be creating a Tomb Raider mini-series to be released with Rise of The Tomb Raider,” Lunsford’s reveal read. “This will act as a prequel to the game and eventual movie.”
Lunsford is referring to this project as a “fan production”, but he also thanks Crystal Dynamics for all of their support. With that we can assume that this is an official thing, but the fact that his reveal has since disappeared does create an aspect of doubt. It’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft has anything to do with this considering they’ve revealed that they’re now publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider and not IP owner Square Enix. It wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft was all about TV, TV, TV, Sports, TV, TV, Skype; and Halo has just been given the (rather underwhelming) live-action prequel TV series treatment as well.
We’ll likely know for sure in the coming days, but until then let’s all speculate about which actress will be picking up the leading role.
