Good news, all you hat-tossing MK fans: looks like Kung Lao is returning to the character roster in Mortal Kombat X. Finnish gaming magazine Pelaaja has a Mortal Kombat X feature in their January 2015 issue. That article has the skinny on a now grey and old Kung Lao returning as a playable character.
Website TestYourMight.com uploaded scans of the article and has provided a translation. The storyline (yes, the Mortal Kombat games have storylines…) for MKX is set 25 years after the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat, which was a retelling of the original Mortal Kombat through to Mortal Kombat 3.
Kung Lao will, like all the other playable characters, have three variations to choose from. The Buzz Saw mode makes his hat integral to many of his moves and gives the rim a serrated edge. The Tempest variation focuses on Lao’s spinning abilities. Finally, the Hat Trick variation will allow you to pull some nasty tricks with Kung Lao’s defining piece of clothing, such as being able to throw it and then dictate when it returns.
There are a few more pieces of information over on TestYourMight.com, including the reveal that the Challenge Tower will be making a return and that NetherRealm will be able to alter challenges on an hourly basis. It sounds like the connected nature of the game has been kicked up a gear, with players getting to choose to join one of five factions, and each faction then vying for control of elements of the game.
And yes, NetherRealm’s Ed Boon has confirmed Kung Lao, and shared a Kung Lao trailer on Twitter:
