If you’re following the trend of universities beginning to offer scholarships and bursaries to eSports players who can excel in their chosen discipline, you can take pride in the University of Pikeville, Kentucky, jumping on to the slowly moving bandwagon. The university will award 20 scholars the chance to represent the institution in various eSports disciplines, starting with League of Legends as their trial program. Pikeville’s program is open to players of all genders.
If all goes well for the students, the program may be extended in the future to cover other games and leagues, eventually joining an eSports inter-varsity league. It’ll be a long time before something like this happens in South Africa generally, but there are already a few schools that award colours (or used to) for excelling in eSports.
