Listen to all that shrieking? You can’t hear it? Just unplug your phone line from your router and stick it in your ear; you’ll hear the Internet shriekingand yelling because Valve has a presentation today at the Game Developers Conference.
That in itself isn’t much to get excited about, except for the fact that, you know, Valve (and HTC) has this Vive VR headset to show off today. The Internet, however, seems more excited about the timing of Valve’s presentation: it takes place at 3PM today, the third day of the third month. That’s THREE THREES. Half-Life 3 confirmed*.
Of course, the odds of Valve actually announcing Half-Life 3 (or even Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3 – three threes, remember!) is slim to none, especially because they have their new VR headset to chat about. They also have to talk about their final iteration of the long-time-coming Steam Controllers. Then there’s talk of them finally unveiling the Steam Machines. So yes, Valve seems wholly preoccupied with the hardware that runs and augments gaming, rather than the games themselves. That’s a pity, but that’s Valve for you.
Of course, there’s a slim chance that Valve does actually announce a new Half-Life. How do you sell 125 million Vive headsets to every active Steam user? You make Half-Life 3 a VR experience that requires the Vive, that’s how.
It’s all speculation, and in fact the BBC (yeah, the BBC) is reporting that they know that Valve isn’t working on any games. They also say that HTC’s chairwoman “hopes” that Half-Life will come to the Vive at some point.
We can dream, can’t we?
If you’re interested, Valve’s presentation will take place at 1AM local time tomorrow morning. Yeah, I’m not staying up for that either.
* It isn’t. Sit down. Calm down now or I’ll turn this Internet around and take us all home.
