The South by Southwest 2015 festival is on the go at the moment, and over the weekend Oculus VR held an interactive Q&A session that incorporated a number of questions gleaned from Reddit. Naturally one of the first questions posed was: when is the Oculus Rift going to come out?

The pressure in on for Oculus VR ever since Valve and HTC unveiled their own Vive VR headset. That headset will be available in a final consumer version by the end of this year. What’s more, Sony has stated that their own PlayStation 4 headset, dubbed Project Morpheus, will be out in 2016. You’d expect Oculus VR to be falling over themselves to announce a release date for the Rift. Not so, it would seem.

“We don’t have anything to announce. Now is not the time nor the place, but everything is going well,” said a still confident Palmer Luckey.

The tough questions continued, with another person asking whether, in light of the Vive and Project Morpheus, Luckey still felt that the Oculus Rift was the best VR headset on the horizon.

“I still stand by that,” Luckey responded. “I’m pretty confident. But that could change. I’d love for it to change because it means there is something even better out there. But I think that’s unlikely right now.”

So while the competition within the VR landscape has dramatically increased, it seems that Oculus remains quietly confident.

“Us partnering with Facebook has allowed us to do a lot of things we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise, like hiring 300 people to work on getting the Rift out as quickly as possible to the quality level we wanted to. I can’t comment on the date one way or another, in either direction, but I can say that nothing is going horribly wrong. Everything is going horribly right.”

One thing is for certain: Oculus will have to come forward with something very impressive between now and the end of the year in order to win back the impatient VR hopeful. Right now, Valve and HTC’s Vive is looking like the best option, which is not a good position for Oculus to be in right now.
