Square Enix’s upcoming title is a 5-on-5 Japanese mech shooter

Figure Heads

Now here’s a tasty little nugget: it turns out Square Enix is back and plans to release a free-to-play third-person shooter later on this year titled Figure Heads.

The game will be set in a futuristic world which has been severely impacted by a barrage of massive meteorites. Consigned to a subterranean life, the remnants of the human race develop robots which they send out into the inhospitable surface in order to gather supplies and routinely check out the state of the planet. Somewhere along the line, somebody decides that a far better use of the robots is for their entertainment value, and thus a robotic 5v5 fighting tournament is born.

This is all wrapped in a distinctly Japanese-flavoured package, with the end result being a strange fusion of post-apocalyptic grunge, mech fighting, and upbeat j-pop complete with anime girls. Check out the trailer after the jump to see what we mean.
