Upcoming Japanese horror game Night Watch promises cute terror

Nippon Ichi, publisher of incredibly niche Japanese titles such as Disgaea and The Witch and the Hundred Knight, have been on a bit of a weird trip of mixing cuteness and horror together in strange configurations. Following on the utterly unpronounceable htoL #NiQ: The Firefly Diary, they’ve recently announced an upcoming horror title called Yomawari (Night Watch), which was initially teased with an eerie real-flesh trailer but whose screenshots reveal a more sucrose presentation.

In Night Watch, you play a young girl who is in search of your missing older sister and pet dog in what appears to be a typical Japanese rural town with only a flashlight to illuminate your way. The flashlight will form of the primary mechanic of the game — much in the manner of htoL #NiQ‘s fireflies — but why I’m particularly excited is that it’s got echoes of Yume Nikki, a surreal and sometimes disturbing adventure game which has achieved something of a cult status since its release in 2004. Night Watch will be released in Japan on October 29th, two days before Halloween, before moving to whichever game platform in the west has the lowest install base at the time.
