Gamescom 2015: Star Wars Battlefront gets aerial combat “Fighter Squadron” mode

EA and DICE have shown off a new game mode coming to Star Wars Battlefront. It’s called Fighter Squadron Mode and it features, you guessed it, ship-based combat scenarios. This will be a welcomed addition for those fans who bemoaned the lack of space battles in the upcoming multiplayer shooter. The caveat (if it can be called that) is that Fighter Squadron Mode encounters won’t take place in space, but rather in the atmospheres of planets.

The new mode will feature AI controlled ships (up to 20) and other players. In the newly released trailer, Rebel forces (comprised of X-Wings, A-Wings and the Millennium Falcon) have to take out an escaping Imperial shuttle. Imperial forces (including TIE-Fighters, TIE-Interceptors, and Boba Fett’s Slave I) have to protect the transport.

Judging by the gameplay trailer you’ll be able to pilot ships from a cockpit viewpoint or third-person perspective. You can check it out in action after the jump.
