After its announcement at E3, Shenmue 3 went on to break Kickstarter records and set new landmarks in crowdfunding campaigns. Now it seems that the developers, Ys Net, are hoping lightning will strike twice and have begun a new crowdfunding campaign for Shenmue 3.
It’s called the “Slacker Backer Campaign” and it’s intended to raise extra funds (duh…) and give more people the chance to become backers. According to Ys Net, this campaign was implemented at the request of fans who missed out on the Kickstarter campaign, but still want to pledge support and get some backer rewards. Said rewards include boxed copies of the final game, mentions in the the credits, signed statues, and physical media like art books, figurines and other memorabilia. Interestingly, the campaign only mentions the PS4 version of the game, and only lists this version in the backer rewards. This is addressed in the FAQ, which basically says that the PC version is still being discussed.
Shenmue 3‘s release date is currently a vague “holiday 2017”, but Ys Net says they are confident they can finish the game and be ready to ship it before December 2017.
