In the latest issue of the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine, there’s an interview with Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann. It’s predominantly Uncharted 4 themed, but there’s also official confirmation that The Last of Us 2 is definitely not a thing that’s happening anytime soon.
This comes a mere week after Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr caused Internet hysteria when he fumbled his words and seemed to out The Last of Us 2. That alleged slip-up added fuel to an already blazing rumour fire that started with voice actor Nolan North saying that he knew Naughty Dog was working on a sequel to The Last of Us.
In the interview, Druckmann addresses the rumours and speculation surrounding the sequel, and then explains why there’s currently nothing happening insofar as The Last of Us 2 goes. The bottom line: he had to drop all work on a new project in order to move onto the Uncharted 4 team.
“The answer is – and this is totally honest, and I’ve said this in the past – that when Bruce [Straley – Naughty Dog game director] and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for The Last of Us 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”
As for Nolan North’s apparent confirmation (which was also dispelled by Joel’s voice actor Troy Baker) of Naughty Dog working on The Last of Us 2: “So, I guess he [North] was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don’t know what we’re doing next and we won’t know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4.”
