Minecraft: Story Mode gets new trailer and plot details

Telltale Games has mastered the episodic adventure game series. Their next collaborative project takes a stab at bringing a sprawling narrative to Mojang’s cultural phenomenon, Minecraft. It’ll be interesting to see how that pans out considering Minecraft is devoid of narrative by nature. Could be fun!

Development started on this new episodic series all the way back in 2012, with formal agreements between Telltale and Mojang being signed in 2013. The game was unveiled in December 2014, with further details provided at Minecon this year. This new trailer, however, gives us a better idea as to what to expect in Minecraft: Story Mode.

You’ll play as Jesse, who can be either male or female, with voice acting being picked up by Patton Oswalt and Catherine Taber respectively. Taber has voiced numerous game characters in the past, including various Star Wars characters in cartoons, and Disney Infinity 3.0. Jesse and his/her pals are fixated by a group of four heroes known as the Order of the Stone. When the they visit EnderCon to meet one of those heroes, Gabriel the Warrior, poo hits the fan and the adventure kicks off. Secretly, I’m holding thumbs for a cameo by Steve and Alex.

The game has an impressive array of voice actors on board: Ashley Johnson (Ellie in The Last of Us) okayes a character called Petra, comedian and actor Brian Posehn plays Axel, and Billy West (who voices Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, Professor Farnsworth etc. in Futurama) is the game’s narrator.

The first episode, officially called (deep breath) Minecraft: Story Mode – A Telltale Games Series – Episode One: The Order of the Stone, is out on 13 October. It’ll be hitting PC, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One via digital download. It’ll come to iOS and Android devices on 15 October, and later to Wii U and PlayStation Vita at an unspecified time.

If you want to wait until the end of October, then you can pick up a boxed version of the game that will give you access to the entire first season and its five episodes.
