Bungie’s Destiny is getting microtransactions “to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year”. By “bolster” we’re assuming they mean finance as more and more Destiny team members and resources get shifted to the finishing up of Destiny 2 for a 2016 release. Obviously, Bungie is not stupid so the microtransactions are entirely cosmetic in nature and completely optional. They’ll include frivolous additions like new emotes.
“It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game,” Bungie’s official statement reads regarding the matter. “Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.”
Now, this could mean a number of things, and according to some sources close to Bungie and Destiny development, what they’re actually hoping to do is use microtransaction income to offset the cost of developing more content, like quests and missions, that will be given to players for free. IF that’s the case, then that’s pretty great. It also makes Destiny: The Taken King Battlechest all the more appealing, because you can pick it up knowing there’ll be no further paid-for DLC in a few months’ time. That’s a big “if” though.
The microtransactions will be available from a new shop front held by NPC Tess Everis when she returns to the Tower next week Tuesday, 13 October.
Naturally, Bungie is being a little cautious with this addition, and has reiterated how optional the whole microtransaction thing will be: “If you’re not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won’t ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.”
The microtransactions will be paid for via a new in-game currency called “Silver”. You’ll need to purchase Silver via whichever console store front you ordinarily access. Cost is yet to be revealed. Everyone will be getting a helping of free Silver next week, so you can try out what Tess has on offer and see whether or not this level of character customisation is a thing that you cannot live without.
