Have you ever thought to yourself: “man, I wish I’d been around during the gold rush in America. No wait! I wish there was some sort of game that captured the essence of the Yukon Gold Rush, but set it in space with heaps of customisable tech, base building, exploration, terrain deformation, artefact hunting, some optional co-op with friends or strangers, and really pretty graphics.”
Well friend, Astroneer is your game.
In development by a small North American indie team called System Era Softworks, Astroneer will fling you out into space to explore and exploit infinite, procedurally generated planets and asteroids. You can carve your way through the terrain, build extraction facilities, cobble together equipment to help you survive, and get rich. As the team puts it: “the world is your Play-Doh.”
Astroneer will be more grounded in reality than many other space games; so expect less Star Wars influences and more SpaceX and the Apollo Program influences.
The game is being built on Unreal Engine 4, and while the reveal trailer shows off some neat ideas and mechanics, System Era says they still have a long way to go. They are, however, planning a Steam Early Access option within the first quarter of 2016. From that they’re hoping to harvest mountains of player feedback to streamline things and build up to first release.
