UPDATE: Oculus Rift pre-orders kick off this Wednesday, 06 January

With the annual Consumer Electronics Show in full swing in Las Vegas, there’s a bevy of tech news heading in our direction. Moments before the show kicked off, however, virtual reality company Oculus VR announced that pre-orders for the Oculus Rift would open on 06 January at 8AM PST. That’s 6PM local South African time tomorrow.

There is still no word of a price.

Pre-orders will be handled directly through the Oculus website. The Rift ships globally, and pre-orders are open to anyone anywhere in the world. UPDATE: Unfortunately, despite the original devkits shipping globally, the consumer version of the Rift will only be shipping to 20 countries. Those countries are: United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan.

Sorry, South Africa, no Rifts for us. At least not for now.

The Rift comes bundled with copies of EVE Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale, as well as an Xbox One controller. With CES kicking up a gear, we wouldn’t be surprised if we get pricing confirmation by this evening. With our current abysmal Rand exchange rate however, we’d brace for financial impact.
