Timed exclusives, in case you haven’t realised by now, are dumb. They serve no real purpose other than allowing company executives to high-five each other in board rooms while imagining all the consoles they’re going to sell. It recently happened with Rise of the Tomb Raider. It’s about to happen with No Man’s Sky, and it’s been happeneing to DLC content for games like Call of Duty and Destiny for pretty much ever.
Now it’s Ubisoft’s turn to shack-up with Microsoft, because according to an Xbox One and Gamestop video for upcoming Tom Clancy’s The Division, DLC will be hitting Xbox One a month before it lands anywhere else.
You can see the Microsoft and Gamestop branded Division promo video below. It’s worth noting that the video doesn’t actually say that all the DLC will be timed exclusive; it simply says “content will be delivered 30 days before Sony”. Nice and blunt there! Whether that means the timed exclusivity locks out the PC version for 30 days as well isn’t clear, but it probably will.
The game is getting a Season Pass (obviously), so whether all that Season Pass content is timed exclusive, or whether there’s a different batch of Xbox One timed content, also isn’t clear. It’s likely the Season Pass content; we can probably expect Ubisoft to clarify in the coming days.
