UPDATE: HTC Vive is $800, or about R12,500 at today’s exchange rate

HTC and Valve have unveiled the price for their upcoming VR headset, the Vive. It’s going to set you back $800. Of course, by “you” I don’t mean any of YOU living in South Africa, because (just like the Oculus Rift) it’s not going to ship here any time soon.

Back in January, Oculus VR unveiled their pricing for the Rift, putting it at a lofty $600 before shipping and importation fees. The Vive is $200 more expensive, but it also comes with a lot more in the box: you get the headset, two wireless controllers for use in VR, two tracking cameras that sit on either side of your room, and a base station that connects to your PC to interpret all your VR hand waggling. Also, those two tracking cameras are now totally wireless.

Pre-orders for the HTC Vive will open in a week from today, on 29 February, but we knew that already. It’ll hit retail in April in the following countries: US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Taiwan, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand. Will it ever hit South Africa? Who knows! I don’t. Let me know when you do.

UPDATE: there’s a swanky trailer that zooms around a render of the final headset, if that’s your kind of marketing thing.
