Rejoice! There’s a new entry in the much-loved Oddworld series on its way, and it’s called Oddworld: Soulstorm. All signs point to it being a remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus in the same way that Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty is a reimagining of the original Abe’s Oddysee.
There aren’t any screenshots or trailers of the game at the moment, but there’s some more knowledge to be gleaned below the break.
Apparently Soulstorm (which is billed as a follow-up to New ‘N’ Tasty) will feature “Abe as you’ve never seen him before”, whatever that means. Here’s what the story is said to entail, as explained in a handy press release:
“Having defeated Molluck The Glukkon, his former boss and RuptureFarms’ meanest inhabitant, Abe soon finds himself – along with 300 newly emancipated Mudokons – without food, water or a place to call home. Stranded alone in the desert, they find solace in a strange new brew – a delicious drink that has insidious ramifications for their newfound freedom.”
Series creator Lorne Lanning explains that there were areas of the narrative that were forced to be left unexplored, and with Soulstorm they’ll be able to revisit those ideas.
“There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell. Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle.”
That’s pretty much all we’ve got to go on for now. In case you’re interested, Oddworld Inhabitants are running a campaign where they’ll gradually reveal shots of Abe’s hands, chest and face if enough people opt to follow their various social media feeds. You can check it all out over at the official site.
