The Dark Souls universe has always seemed ripe for a tabletop tie-in. It’s a lore-heavy universe, it has iconic enemies and locations, and the games reward teamwork. Clearly I’m not the only one who thinks this, because Steamforged Games recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Dark Souls – The Board Game. It must’ve been a bit of a surprise when the campaign was fully funded in just three minutes.
A quick look at the updates tab on the campaign page shows that Steamforged wasn’t expecting such an enormous success. The campaign asked for £50,000 but after only a day it’s currently sitting on over £540,000. With three more weeks to go for the campaign, it looks like this might be a record-breaker.
It only takes a quick look at the board game to understand the popularity. Steamforged previously worked on a game called Guild Ball and they seem eager to do right by the Dark Souls fan base. The game is described as “a strategically challenging, deeply immersive combat exploration game for 1-4 players set in the Dark Souls universe”. The game will feature beautifully designed miniatures and promises a high degree of challenge. Here’s a demo video of a boss fight in action:
There are still some stretch goals to be met for the campaign, and it looks like Steamforged may have to make up some new ones to accommodate the surge in popularity. Dark Souls – The Board Game is estimated to ship worldwide in April 2017.
