BioWare is planning to announce its unannounced new game sometime “in the not too distant future”, publisher EA has confirmed. BUT WHAT IS IT? That’s anybody’s guess for the moment, but it’s probably not about something that happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
Talking with GamesIndustry about EA’s current and future prospects, and the company’s multiple ongoing Star Wars projects, studio boss Patrick Söderlund reiterated that they’ve totally got other things going on too. Including BioWare’s super secret, not Star Wars thing.
“We decided to take a couple of our best development teams, from the whole ecosystem, and put them on Star Wars. They could have built new IP otherwise, but the opportunity for us as a company, and for our development teams, what we can build within that framework,” he explained.
“But we’ve been very open about the fact that BioWare is working on a new IP, and we’ll get to talk about that in the not too distant future. We have other teams working on new IP as well. I think it’s about a balance, right? Making sure that we continue to push what great looks like for Battlefield or FIFA or Madden – or Star Wars, for that matter – while continuing to invest in something new.”
Back in June, EA’s Blake Jorgensen said during an earnings call that they’ve got a new IP prepped for launch in 2017, promising something “soon”, but the publisher didn’t show anything more during its E3 presser. What a dastardly tease.
In the meantime, obviously, BioWare is finishing up work on Mass Effect Andromeda, scheduled to drop early next year.
