Sundered is “a horrifying fight for survival and sanity” from the developers of Jotun

It’s becoming exceedingly more rare for me to come across footage of a brand new game that legitimately makes me go “wow…”. This is one of those times.

Thunder Lotus, the developers of the stylish, Viking-inspired Jotun, have announced that they’re currently working on a new IP called Sundered, and it looks absolutely stunning. The game will center around Eshe, “a wanderer in a ruined world, trapped in ever-changing caverns teeming with eldritch horrors,” and is described as “a replayable Metroidvania.” Hit the jump for the reveal trailer and more info.

In a post on the official PlayStation blog, the game’s developer took the time to explain what Sundered is all about.

“Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival and sanity. You play Eshe, a wanderer in a ruined world, trapped in ever-changing caverns teeming with eldritch horrors. Harness the power of corrupted relics to defeat gigantic bosses at the cost of your humanity.”

The new game takes some inspiration from Thunder Lotus’ Jotun, especially with regards to its meticulously hand-drawn motif and massive boss fights, but is at its core an entirely new experience. The post reads: “With Sundered, we’ve added more complex mechanics, tons of replayability, and meaningful choices. We’ve gone into a darker universe heavily inspired by Lovecraft’s writings.”

On the topic of gameplay, the developer explains that Sundered will be highly replayable thanks to its procedurally generated worlds, different abilities, and a myriad of unique endings. Something akin to “a replayable Metroidvania, close to Rogue Legacy and Super Metroid.”

Sundered is expected to launch sometime next year on PS4, and I can’t wait to play it.
