The Surge is a strange, promising-looking thing. I first wrote about it at the rear end of last year where I said that it looked a lot like a futuristic reimagining of Dark Souls, which it totally does. And that’s actually a very good thing. As long as the combat feels even a little like Dark Souls, it should be a pretty intense experience.

Speaking of intense, the game’s latest CGI trailer is just that. Titled “Bad day at the office,” the trailer sets the scene for the game’s story, and introduces the totally-not-evil CREO corporation that strives to save the world “from itself.” Because that kind of thing usually turns out so well.

“Freshly recruited as an augmented worker, [game protagonist] Warren’s first day coincides with a catastrophic event deep inside CREO, during the routine surgical operation meant to graft, through flesh and bone, the exo-suit required for the company’s employees,” reads the description. “This disastrous event marks the first in a series of brutal events, turning this first day at CREO into a hellish nightmare of robots gone haywire, crazed employees with fried cranial implants, and artificial intelligence all wanting Warren dead.”

The video’s description goes on to detail one of the game’s core mechanics: scavenging powerful equipment from your foes to make you “faster, stronger, and sturdier.”

The Surge will be headed to PC, PS4, and XBO sometime this May. Pretty screenshots below.
