Overwatch’s next hero might be an ingenious little kid

That’s right, folks, it’s time for another round of intense speculation about a new Overwatch hero!
An “interview” made its way onto Overwatch‘s official blog recently, spotlighting Efi Oladele, a brilliant eleven-year-old inventor hailing from Numbani. Oladele specialises in “robotics and artificial intelligence” and has a penchant for building drones and robots. Is this Overwatch‘s next hero? Is she the creator of a new hero? None of the above? We don’t know, but we have theories…
Blizzard has previously teased details about new characters or their backgrounds via its official blog, including the enigmatic Sombra, so there’s reason to believe the interview is hinting at something big. First, let’s have a closer look at said interview.
According to the blurb, Oladele “became the most recent recipient of the Adawe Foundation’s prestigious ‘genius grant,’ in recognition of her many accomplishments.” When asked how she got into robots and AI, she responded: “Well, I’ve always been interested. After my mom and dad got me my first robotics kit, I became obsessed with putting together little drones. When I started to get good at it, I tried to build robots to do my chores and help around the house. My parents think it’s cheating… It’s no fair!” She goes on to explain that she wants to someday “build something that can keep us safe, like the new OR15s!” In response to a question about what she has planned for her grant, Oladele responded only with “Oh… I have an idea…”
There isn’t a lot to take away from all of that, but if the purpose of this interview is to hint at a new hero, chances are it won’t be Efi Oladele herself. Not everyone will be cool with shooting children in the face, after all. The only way we see her being added to the game’s roster is if she plays a little like Abathur from Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm, sitting back, letting drones do all the dirty work. The prevailing theory, however, is that Oladele is simply the creator of a new hero, given her skill set. Probably something akin to Bastion, but hopefully not nearly as infuriating.
Blizzard will almost certainly tease the crap out of the game’s next hero before any official announcement, so we’ll just have to wait and see. In related news, did you know Overwatch is getting a server browser? Did you know that the Overwatch team doesn’t want you to use a mouse and keyboard if you’re playing on console? And OMG, Lúcio is coming to Heroes of the Storm, you guys!
