Monopoly retires three classic tokens, replaces them with a T-rex, penguin, and rubber ducky

I’m not terribly fond of board games – they’re more Chris’ department. But of the very few I’ve played over the years, one in particular stood out as the most fun and engaging. I’m talking, of course, about Talisman: The Magical Quest Game. But Monopoly was cool too, I guess.

Speaking of Monopoly, Hasbro has confirmed that they’ll be ditching three classic tokens and replacing them with new ones as voted in by “fans across the globe”.

Hasbro has revealed the results of the “Monopoly Token Madness Vote”, which took place from 10 to 31 January. The purpose of the vote was to select the eight tokens that will be included in the next iteration of the board game. Fans were able to pick from a lineup of 64 tokens, and in total 4.3 million votes were cast.

Unfortunately, three classic tokens just didn’t make the cut, and will not be seen in the next edition of the game. The thimble, the boot, and the wheelbarrow are out. It’s kind of sad really, as all three tokens have been in the game for ages. On the other hand, I hated playing as any of them so… meh.

Now, on to the eight winners. The remaining classic pieces all survived the cull, while the three new pieces that received the most votes are the T-rex, rubber ducky, and penguin.

This new lineup should be included in Monopoly sets later this year.
