I tried Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption on a friend’s console back in the day, and I really liked it. But I figured that since I didn’t own a console I’d just have to wait a few months before I’d get to play it on PC. Well, it’s about seven years later and it still hasn’t happened, OR HAS IT?!

No. No it hasn’t. But a new mod for GTA V looks about as close as we’re likely to get anytime soon.

The mod, aptly named Red Dead Redemption V, is currently being worked on by a group of modders called .White Team, and it aims to port RDR‘s map into GTA V. The group announced the project over on the GTA Forums, where they’ve included a few screenshots, as well as a short FAQ sheet.

“Our goal is to bring you the full map with additional content which will be unveiled later on,” explained .White.

The project has reportedly been in development for the past two years and will convert assets from the Xbox 360 version of the original RDR. But the group doesn’t seem to be content with just porting one map into another, as they’re currently looking for “scripters who are able to remake any of the game’s original content over to GTAV, think minigames and certain mechanics such as Dead Eye Targeting.”

The mod is relatively far into the development process, and .White claims that “the framework is all there”. The group plans to release a beta for the mod sometime between June and August, but we’ll get to see the it in action through more screenshots and a teaser trailer “as soon as possible”.

All of this is almost enough to make you forget that Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to launch later this year, and also isn’t in development for PC (yet?). Almost.
