I’m still not entirely sold on The Surge, a sci-fi action RPG by the same people responsible for the lacklustre Lords of the Fallen. Trailers and gameplay footage look promising, and its Souls-inspired combat could be really brilliant, but I’m holding off on any real hype until I see more of the game in action.
One of The Surge‘s major features is the ability to target the limbs and equipment of enemies, and after the deed is done, loot them to add to your own arsenal. It’s an interesting mechanic that takes centre stage in a gory new trailer.
“The Surge gives players greater control over what they loot from defeated enemies,” reads the video’s description. “During combat, they can individually target specific body parts, which they can damage with a wise combination of vertical and horizontal attacks to then slice off – and what part they dismember directly determines what piece of equipment they loot. When approaching an enemy, players will make a difficult decision: do they target an unarmored body part for a shorter fight, or risk a lengthier, damaging battle for a chance at slicing off a shiny new piece of equipment?”
Deck13 Interactive’s The Surge is expected to release on 16 May for PC, PS4, and XBO.
