Red Dead Redemption V, the ambitious fan project remaking the cowboy-’em-up for PC as a Grand Theft Auto V mod, has been cancelled as a result of a cease-and-desist bounty from the county marshals. I mean publisher Take-Two.

“I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted , and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project,” modder Mr Leisurewear announced on GTAForums. “So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry.”

The project had already been in development for more than two years, with a beta expected sometime in July or August. This isn’t exactly unprecedented, however. I can’t even think of a fan project like this that hasn’t been shut down sooner or later, and with Red Dead Redemption 2 moseying into town later this year, the timing on this one couldn’t be worse. Maybe in ten years.
